Photos and Memories Inspire a Peaceful "Stroll of Mind"

A few weeks ago, just days after the first wave of closings began, I did what I often do when feeling overwhelmed, I took a stroll through the JC Raulston Arboretum, and took photos of spring blooms. At the time, the arboretum was encouraging visitors to come and find peace - while observing social distancing. Just two days later, they closed the gates - due to “an abundance of caution”. For those of us who use a walk in nature- whether an elegant garden- or a simple local park, to relieve everyday stress, having that important resource cut off feels like a major loss in the anxious moments of life today.

This morning, I reminded myself- that the purpose of a photograph is to capture a moment... and later trigger a memory. Scrolling through the photos I took at what was the beginning of this crisis - inspired me to look back at the ones I have taken over the course of the past year- as I strolled the same paths.
Whatever the season, whatever my own turmoil - those paths offered peace. Nature reminded me how life moves forward no matter what- seasons change... plants thrive in different conditions... and, if I concentrate, I can find my peace- in my mind.

Where does your mind need to walk today? Perhaps it is with friends and family during better days. Perhaps it is with a beloved friend (human or animal) who has passed on... but is remembered in your photos (and heart)... perhaps, like me, it is a time when you found peace in nature.

Our brains are designed to respond powerfully to visual cues... I hope you use that gift today to find some moments of peace! Be well!
